We’re all aware of the social media revolution that is Facebook. It was started simply as a social networking site where people could find people they had recently met.
It is now a $2 billion company, and its owner, Mark Zuckerberg was the world’s youngest billionaire, owning a majority stake in the company. So how did they do it? The answer is advertising. Various companies pay Facebook to host their ads. But unlike other websites, Facebook shows the relevant ads based on a person’s interests and information from their profile. This makes it hugely less irritating than having ads pop up when you’re surfing. That was an entrepreneurial idea.
